What we are up to in Room 211!
We have completed our unit on Mem Fox and enjoyed our visit from the Strezoski family. The authentic Australian foods were delicious and the children tried everything.
We are reading Laura Numeroff stories now. She writes circular stories and we are again discussing retelling with details, summarizing stories, and reflecting on the author's message. The DRA window will close this Friday. I am proud of all the students because everyone has improved! Within the next two weeks we will begin our Poetry unit for reading and writing.
In writing the children are still working on their narrative stories which they will share at Author's Celebration next Wednesday the 23rd at 9:30. Hope to see as many of you as possible then. During our poetry unit we will be writing several different types of poems. Stay tuned.
In math our focus in unit 8 is money and place value. We are working with coins, counting coin combinations, making specific values and adding a dollar bill. We will also be discussing making change when we shop. Please continue to practice these concepts at home with the children. Also, counting by 10s, then begin counting by 5s and then to 1s. This will help when they are counting coin combinations. We have also been practicing exchanging coins- 5 pennies for a nickel, 5 pennies and 1 nickel for a dime, etc.
We are beginning to get busy with field trips, concerts in school and field day. This Friday (the 18th) we will be seeing a show in Tarrytown. Thank you for returning the permission slips. If you haven't please do so by tomorrow. I need to have them in 24 hours before the trip. We will be getting on the bus this Friday and next no later than 9:15. Please make sure your child is in school before that time or they risk missing the bus.
Also, thank you for the "Pennies for Patients" . As of yesterday, we have earned over $64.00 and those that returned the boxes have received a Citizenship certificate. We are trying to earn a classroom Citizenship Certificate for the next Character Assembly. So far we are close to our goal.
