*WHEN YOU BELIEVE, YOU WILL ACHIEVE

Reader's Workshop:
We have just started our non-fiction unit. We will be reviewing non-fiction text features. We will learn how to determine the main idea and supporting details in a non-fiction text. We are very excited to be focusing our non-fiction unit around biographies. Students have all chosen a famous person that they would like to learn more about. They have been very excited to read their biographies and are very focused on learning everything about their person!!
Word Work:
We have been learning and applying a variety of strategies to help us choose the correct answer in a CLOZE passage. Read the ENTIRE passage, highlight clues before AND after the blank, eliminate answers that do not make sense. We also are learning about the different parts of speech, using and applying correct punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.
Math:
We are on Unit 6 which focuses on geometry. We are learning about lines, line segments, and rays. We are learning about parallel and intersecting line [segments] and rays. We are learning about vertices, angles, and angles measure. Basic facts, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are continuing to be practiced everyday.
Writer's Workshop
We are learning how to write reports! Students will learn to organize their notes they have been taking on their biographies into sections in order to write a report.
We are continuing our work on writing an opening that captures our reader's attention, using a sequence of events with transition words, using dialogue throughout our writing, and writing an exciting ending.
We are also working on writing to a writing prompt.
Social Studies/Science:
In Social Studies, we are learning to become cartographers. We are locating and labeling the states in North America, and we will be adding mountain ranges, forests, and parks to our maps.
We have also discussed the Roxbury ROX rules and how they apply to good character.
In Science, we will be doing a measurement unit.
Ways to Help your Child at Home:
READ, READ, READ, READ, READ, READ, READ!!! After your child has read, ask them questions. What was your favorite part and WHY? Did this story make you think of anything that has happened in your own life and how did it help you to relate to the character? What is the author's message and use evidence to support why you think so. What do you think is the most important event in the story and WHY? What do you think another title for this story could be and WHY?
*I will also send home a list of questions with your child that will help you when they have finished reading*
Always practice math facts involving addition and subtraction. Continue counting money, making change, and telling time.
Homework:
Homework is given every night. Please sign your child's agenda pads every night. Homework is not meant to be a struggle; therefore, if your child is having a problem with the homework, please send in a note with what they were having difficulty with, so I can work further work on these skills in a small group.
